Play Accordion Solitaire online
Accordion is famously hard. Deal the cards out in a row and try to squeeze the whole deck into one pile by jumping cards onto matching neighbours.
How to play
- Deal. Tap the stock to deal cards one at a time into a line. The line wraps into rows of ten, or six on a phone.
- Jump. A pile can move onto the pile directly to its left, or three places to its left, if the two top cards match in suit or rank.
- The whole pile moves, so the card you moved is now on top. The gap closes up.
- Tap or drag. Tap a pile and it jumps if it can. If it fits in both places it goes next door, so drag it when you want the three-place jump.
- The goal is to finish with all 52 cards in a single pile.
Tips
- Look three back. Jumps of three are easy to miss and often open up more matches.
- Don't jump just because you can. Sometimes keeping a card where it is leaves a better match for the next deal.
- Keep the line short. The more piles you have, the harder it is for them all to meet.
Questions people ask
- Can every game of Accordion be won?
- In theory almost every deal can be won, if you knew the order of the cards in advance. You don't, so in practice wins are rare. That's part of its reputation.
- Does the whole pile move, or just the top card?
- The whole pile moves, so the card you moved ends up on top of the new pile.
- Does Accordion have other names?
- Yes. It's also known as Idle Year and Tower of Babel.
